Rejoicing this Easter

Many people see Easter as an excuse for an extra-long weekend and an opportunity to indulge in chocolate treats.

The shift from Easter being a time to focus on Jesus’ unconditional love and sacrifice, to its present-day festivities has occurred gradually. Some of us perhaps haven’t even noticed the seemingly insignificant, but colossal changes that have crept up on this meaningful event.

Our focus has been drawn to hot cross buns, rabbit-shaped chocolates and decorated eggs. So, how can we, as church and ministry leaders, encourage those in our congregation to refocus on Jesus’ sacrifice?

  1. Biblical studies

Provide opportunities for trusted leaders in your church to hold in-depth bible studies for small and intimate groups. In these study sessions, use resources that will encourage open discussions on the events leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection. This will not only deepen the fellowship within your congregation, but allow your church family to unravel what Jesus endured when he died, and what this sacrifice means for us.

  1. Community outreach and service projects:

Encourage your congregation to get involved in community outreach initiatives that reflect the sacrificial love of Jesus. This could be organising food drives, volunteering at homeless shelters, or serving marginalised communities. This will also allow your congregation to share the true meaning of Easter and lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance.

  1. Personal or group reflection and prayer

Hold extra prayer time at your church, open for anyone to join. This will invite people to set aside space for personal reflection, as well as join in discussion during the Easter season. This time held in the house of God could involve journaling, meditating on relevant scripture, or simply spending quiet time in prayerful contemplation.

  1. Interactive workshops:

Host interactive workshops that explore different aspects of the Easter story, such as the historical context or theological significance, allowing people to deepen their understanding of Easter’s significance. Provide them with resources so they can leave the workshop and reflect further on what they have learnt. These resources could include literary texts, podcasts, sermons, or devotionals.

  1. Easter praise and worship:

Arrange an Easter-themed praise and worship event. This could be kept to your church family exclusively, or you could encourage the community to join you. Praise Jesus using traditional and modern songs or hymns that specifically celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. This will bring glory and honour to God, uplift the spirits of those attending, and reinforce the message of Easter through music.

As Easter draws near this year, let’s focus on bringing our saviour the honour and praise he deserves.
