WORKS

We know we are not saved by works but by grace; God’s sovereign gift to all those who believe in and follow Jesus. Consequently, there is a tendency to undervalue works even though numerous scriptures tell us that what we do is important.

In James 2:26 we are told, faith without works is dead.

In Matthew 25:14-29, the Parable of the Talents, we read about the lazy servant who is chastised.

And in John 14:15 Jesus says, ‘if you love me, you will keep my commandments.’

So many Christians are seeking their purpose in life but our purpose is clear: to be followers of Jesus and keep his commandments.

So, what was Jesus’ purpose?

In 1 John 3:8, we are told: ‘the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.’

In John 9:4, Jesus says, ‘we must work the works of him who sent me.’

And, in John 20:21, Jesus tells his disciples, Peace to you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you.’

I was impressed recently by someone who said that we don’t need to seek a purpose for our lives. For so long, Christians have sought individual purpose which can be about self-fulfilment. We don’t need to look any further; our purpose as followers of Jesus is already clear.

However, within that overall purpose, we have individual assignments. I know that might sound like splitting hairs, but I like that clarity of definition. What is my assignment within the overall purpose of God?

My friends, for too long, many Christians have rested too comfortably in the knowledge that we are saved by grace, but if the love of God in us, how can we not feel a passion for those around us who are going to a lost eternity?

There is work to be done, and we have been given an assignment.

I speak to myself as much as to anyone, that God may rekindle our passion to see the lost and do all that we can to bring the life saving gospel of Jesus to them.

While there is a cost to that, no one can look into the face of Jesus and say the price is too high.
