The Darkness

Have you ever been in total darkness? It’s really disconcerting. I was once on the bridge of a boat that was travelling through the night. There were only a few dimly lit lights and I found it very unsettling to be in the middle of a vast ocean and not knowing what was out there or where I was.

It was such a relief when daylight arrived, and we could see where we were. It is true, the only thing that can dispel darkness is light. The Bible talks of two kinds of darkness, that which is outer and that which is inner.

Isaiah said in 9:2 (and Jesus repeated to Matthew 4:16): ‘The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light’.

John 1:4 tells us: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’.

Jesus is the only way to get inner light. The Bible makes so many references to this:

Psalm 119:105: ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’.

John 3:19: ‘And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. Therefore, for those who have chosen inner darkness, they will be given also outer darkness’.

Matthew 8:12: ‘The sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness’.

Matthew 25:30: ‘And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’.

In darkness you get lost, you fall and you injure yourself. You have to choose to switch on the lights. You do this by accepting Jesus.
