IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

Isn’t it interesting how in the Bible there are a number of noticeable little things that affirm its authenticity?

In the book of John, for example, Mary is only referred to as the mother of Jesus. Why is that significant?

Well, if the Bible were fabricated, as the Cynics argued with certainty that it was, John would surely refer to Mary by name only, just as the other gospels do.

However, when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home – John 19:26-27.

I believe John literally took Mary away because it was too distressing for her and that he came back at the end, which is why so much of what Jesus said on the cross is missing from the gospel of John.

Clearly, John took his responsibility of being a son seriously. It is curious, because Mary had other family members, but John took the responsibility of looking after her.

I have never referred to my mother by her first name and I believe this is normal. You call your mother mum or mother. Therefore, it is totally logical that John would not have referred to Mary by her first name.

It’s in these little details that the Bible proves to us again and again that it is a true account of what happened. We can with full confidence know that the word of God is true, that Jesus is who he said he was, and that salvation is available to all who believe in him.
