NO ROOM FOR COMPETITION

Nearly every sport involves competition, either to beat the other person or team, or to beat an established record. So, is competition good?

Well, yes, and no.

While competition can help you push your limits further than you thought possible, other times it can make you do stupid things, a dare for example, in which you end up hurting yourself or others.

How does that apply to Christians? Are we to compete with other Christians? Other ministries? Should we benchmark ourselves against their success?

No! It makes no sense to compete against your own side in an event.

I remember football in school. There were those who would monopolise the ball so they could be the ones who scored. Even though one of their own team was by the goalmouth in a scoring position, they wouldn’t pass it. Inevitably, they were tackled and lost the ball to the other side.

In past centuries when two tribes were warring, they often decided to have their champion fight for them, and the champion who won, would be the tribe who won. David and Goliath are a similar case in the bible where each of them is champion for an opposing camp.

Christians are a team. There are individual players who have different roles and positions but if we compete with each other, we lose. If we work together under the direction of our captain, Jesus, we have already won.

Satan may be the prince of this world but Jesus, our captain and champion, has overcome the world. He is King of Kings, Lord of Lords. The prince of this world is no match for him. So long as we stick with the team and follow directives, we win.
