People, Not Things

My wife, Tracie, recently said she felt really happy. Why? We were doing nothing special, just relaxing at home watching the TV by ourselves.

Can you remember the last time when you were really happy? You may have experienced momentary happiness when you received a gift or something good happened but, for us, experiencing lasting happiness usually involves people. Watching children grow up, a meal with friends, being active together, perhaps even just watching the sun go down with a loved one; these moments burn an indelible mark in our minds and hearts and we often think back to those moments of peace, contentment and happiness.

When Christmas time comes, there are so many things we all get, and yet the most important are not the things but the people: those that bring the gifts rather than the gifts themselves; those with whom you share life and love, friendship and fun – that is where true value lies.

We remember the birth of Jesus at Christmas. He didn’t come for things. He had plenty of things in heaven that He willingly left behind. He came for people and brought the greatest gift He could possibly bring: Himself.

When, on Christmas day, all of the gifts have been opened (both wanted and unwanted) and the wrapping paper is in the dustbin, long after the gifts have been consumed or discarded, what will endure are the people and the memories of the time we shared.

Hopefully, you will also remember the Saviour who came to free us from our past and give us a glorious future. His gift is Himself and eternal life, and it’s available all the year through, not just at Christmas.
