Hebrews 12:1 says, ‘…let us lay aside every weight…’
The author, thought to be Paul, talks here about running a race. It is in this context that he refers to laying aside every weight.
Weight is a killer. Putting it on is easy, but getting rid of it requires major effort. I know, because I struggle with getting weight off.
Paul isn’t talking about physical weight but, for those of us who carry those extra pounds/kilos, we know that weight makes it harder to run. It’s hard on the knees, it’s harder to breathe, and you will definitely be slower that those who are slim and fit.
So, what are the weights that we carry that could be slowing us down spiritually?
The past, and our failures in the past. The enemy is a master at reminding us of our past. He wants to rob us of our faith to believe God for greater things in the future.
Words spoken over us that still torment. Words such as: ‘you are no good, you can’t do it, God doesn’t love you.’
Our present circumstance. Perhaps circumstances such as poverty, relationship issues, health, etc are your obstacle.
All these and many other things can hold us back.
The problem with weight in the natural is, you have to do very little to add it. Just eat a little more and exercise a little less. To lose the weight though, you need to set yourself a target and apply discipline, dedication and determination.
So it is with the spiritual. We need to identify those things that are holding us back and then set ourselves the target of shedding the weight off them. We will need to apply the same discipline, dedication and determination to lose our spiritual weight.
Sadly, we sometimes fail in a moment of weakness and succumb to temptation. Failure isn’t fatal, but accepting it is! It is not those who fall that do not complete the race; it is those who fall and do not get up.
Life can be a battle. Get used to the idea and find a way to enjoy the journey despite setbacks. Count your successes, tick them off the list one by one and you will be surprised at your own achievements.
When you finally get there, don’t let up but press on. This is when the real battle begins. It is easier to achieve the weight reduction in the first place than to keep the weight off, which requires having a permanent change of life. You need to embed into your everyday routine those disciplines that brought you success in the first place. To embed routines into your life takes constant practice until they become second nature. It is then that you can follow them without thinking. As in the natural, so it is in the spiritual!
