A Virus

We have heard continuously about the COVID-19 virus and the havoc it is creating across the world. The World Health Organisation and governments are doing all they can to prevent its spread including total shutdowns of towns, cities and whole countries.

Sadly, hundreds of thousands have caught the virus and thousands have died and many more will die. This is a tragedy. A vaccine is being feverishly worked on in medical research centres and no doubt one will be found.

This caused me to think of another virus that affects all humanity; sin. The very first inhabitants of this planet caught the sin-virus by their disobedience, and they have since passed it on to all their offspring. It is genetically inherited, and the infection rate is 100%.

The consequence for all is physical and spiritual death because it is in our bloodstream. There is no cure for our physical bodies, no vaccine that is available, but there is a cure for our spirit. We need a spiritual blood transfusion from one whose blood is totally free of the disease.

In 1 John 1:7, we are told: ‘…the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin’. So, God has provided a way for us to be free of the virus of sin.

He has also found a way for us to discard these human bodies that have been so infected, and give us resurrected bodies.

‘For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body put on immortality. When the perishable puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: Death has been swallowed up in victory’ (1 Corinthians 15:53-4).

Our only eternal hope is found in accepting this free gift of Jesus Christ from God.
