Led by the Spirit

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the Sons of God. (Romans 8:14)

I always try to view things from different perspectives. For instance, Galatians 6:9 says, ‘Let us not become weary in doing good.’

Question:        Why does it say that?

Answer:           Because they must have been growing weary.

Question:        Why were they growing weary?

Answer:           Because they were probably criticised and ridiculed just as Christians are today when we try to tell people about Jesus.

This scripture reminds us to not grow weary, ‘for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’

Going back to Romans 8:14, scripture doesn’t say that the sons of God are led by the Spirit of God; it says that those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

We often hear that we are heirs with Christ. We hear we are sons and daughters of the living God and that we will rule and reign with Him, but we rarely hear it in reverse.

Do you let the Spirit of God lead you?  If you do, then you are a son of God who can claim all of God’s promises, like: ‘All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.’ (Romans 8:28)

In Matthew 7:21-23 there is a story about people who tried to enter the Kingdom of Heaven through good deeds. Jesus tells us that they relied on the many things they had done for God but He himself said, ‘I never knew you’ because their deeds did not reflect the will of the Father.

Jesus explains that actions alone are not what qualifies us for the Kingdom of Heaven. It is accepting Jesus and being led by the Holy Spirit that allows us to call ourselves sons of God.  John 1:12 puts it very succinctly: ‘But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become the children of God.’

The important question seems to be: are you being led by the Spirit of God? Not by your human spirit, not by peer pressure, not by the spirit of this age, not by your own human desires, aspirations or ambitions, but by the Holy Spirit?  Then and only then can you claim to be a son or daughter of God.

There are so many voices in our lives, but let us humbly submit ourselves to seeking, listening to and being led by the voice of the Holy Spirit.
